Tram 83

They know where I live
They know just how much I have left to give
They live here with me
And tell me every day how they will never set me free
Hopeless letters sent abroad
The ever present promise of a stay in a hospital ward
Get replies from Paris
Tales of a life never lived that I still miss
Why don't you come on down to Tram 83?
Where you can have anything, and nothing for free
Take me away with you, it could be so easy
But you'll never really leave here, that much you must see
A glistening career
The type of life no-one lives if they live it here
Go get work in the mines
Or I could drain all of your money while you stand here if you don't mind
Why don't you come on down to Tram 83?
Where you can have anything, and nothing for free
Take me away with you, it could be so easy
But you'll never really leave here, that much you must see
We get all sorts here
Low-lifes, scammers, politicians
Musicians from the former Zaire
Just hang your coat by the door
Ignore the mess on the floor
If you've got money you've got nothing to fear
Why don't you come on down to Tram 83?
Where you can have anything, and nothing for free
Take me away with you, it could be so easy
But you'll never really leave here, that much you must see

Stuck in Here
02:35
|
|||
Spring is upon us and the sky is clearing
The same cannot be said for the mood in our house
I know you think you have good intentions
But I’ve been around long enough to know where those get you
We’re stuck in here
It burns my skin to have you near
I’d leave right now
I’d live my life without you if I only knew how
We talk like diplomats on our first day on the job
I wish I couldn’t bear the tension, then maybe it’d stop
We’re in a bad place, it’s true (we’re in a bad place, it’s true)
Can’t seem to be anywhere else with you (nowhere else to go)
We’re stuck in here
It burns my skin to have you near
I’d leave right now
I’d live my life without you if I only knew how
We’re stuck in here
It burns my skin to have you near
I’d leave right now
I’d live my life without you if I only knew how
If I only knew how
If I only knew

Submarine Song

Far beneath the featureless surface
Miles away from those we're doing this for
You and I have each other and little else
The periscope gives ample proof of this
The few poor souls who came with us
All feel the tension too
And I lean on you, and you on me
An unquestioned certain trust
Confined together
I should know you better
You should look me in the eye
I know some of what eats away at you
But I don't know what either one of us can do
Someone said today they could hardly breathe
The air too stale, our travels too long
The truth is pressing in on us from all sides
We block out hopeful thoughts with ease
Confined together
I should know you better
You should look me in the eye
I know some of what eats away at you
But I don't know what either one of us can do
Enemies once again light up the sonar
Positions one and all, they won't get far
But each battle dials up the pressure that bit more
And we don't want to live like this anymore
Confined together
I should know you better
You should look me in the eye
I know some of what eats away at you
But I don't know what either one of us can do

Captive
04:02
|
|||
I am the captive, you are the captor
I am a small bird, you are a raptor
Give me pain, oh, tender disaster
Give me fear, come bring home the rapture
My friends see the faces we put on
They ask me where the nervousness comes from
No one knows what goes on inside our home
But your secret isn't safe with you, I'll prove I'm not yours to own
I wake with a start at night, try not to wake you
Start an escape plan, pray for a breakthrough
You say I need us as much as you do
I try and trust myself, hoping it's not true
My friends see the faces we put on
They ask me where the nervousness comes from
No one knows what goes on inside our home
But your secret isn't safe with you, I'll prove I'm not yours to own
I am the captive, you are the captor
I am a small bird, you are a raptor
Give me pain, oh, tender disaster
Give me fear, come bring home the rapture
I am the lab rat, you are the scientist
You learn my weaknesses and you expand the list
I try to make real that which does not exist
A brighter future, a life without your fists
My friends see the faces we put on
They ask me where the nervousness comes from
No one knows what goes on inside our home
But your secret isn't safe with you, I'll prove I'm not yours to own

To the recipient of these, my final words
I am happy, i am grateful that you found me
Though it may come as a shock to you at first
For my appearance must be poor, to put it mildly
Yes, my circumstances may need some explaining
I have been away from home for several days
My pride overcame my fear and lack of training
And I set out into unknown, unnamed caves
I came to these caves with the sole intention
Of sharing their secrets with you
Instead I lie trapped in them for all time
Or until such time as the museums that spurned me
Take an interest in the grave this dream has earned me
At first, dear friend, I made such rapid progress
My instincts and equipment served me well
I abseiled, squeezed and climbed into the recess
Into my own private pit of hell
Hours in and still nothing seemed to satisfy
The lure of the unknown was just as strong
If I'd known that it was here I was to die
I'd maybe not have lingered quite as long
I came to these caves with the sole intention
Of sharing their secrets with you
Instead I lie trapped in them for all time
Or until such time as the museums that spurned me
Take an interest in the grave this dream has earned me
In another life, this could've been my career
Hunting for fossils, jewels, and precious stones
Instead an appetite for wonder led me here
The final resting place for my young bones
Just one misplaced step, one late reaction
Was all it took to fix me to this place
Further to the left by just a fraction
And I'd have waltzed right out, a smile upon my face
I came to these caves with the sole intention
Of sharing their secrets with you
Instead I lie trapped in them for all time
Or until such time as the museums that spurned me
Take an interest in the grave this dream has earned me
